Dr Kavita Aggarwal

NHS England
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Kavita graduated with distinction in undergraduate Medicine from Imperial College London in 2013. She is currently an Ophthalmology trainee in Oxford. Her keen interest in leadership led her to complete both the Mary Seacole and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme with the NHS Leadership Academy. Furthermore, she has completed an MSc in Healthcare Leadership with the University of Birmingham and is excited to apply the theory she learnt as a National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow. She has also completed an online MBA with the Quantic School of Business to help further her understanding of the commercial and financial aspects of delivering healthcare.

Kavita has actively sought opportunities to develop her skills and improve patient care. She is part of the NHS England’s Clinical Entrepreneur scheme where she hopes to develop a virtual cataract pre-assessment tool for patients. Kavita is an active participant of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as an examiner and trainee co-editor of College News. As a lead for the UKISCRS Young Ophthalmologists committee, Kavita has helped to organise national training events for fellow trainees.

Kavita also has a keen interest in research and has received several prizes including the European Paediatric Ophthalmology Society travel grant to Zurich, oral presentation prize at the British Society for Refractive Surgery and poster prize at the Royal Society of Medicine.

Kavita enjoys teaching and is currently undertaking a postgraduate certificate in medical education at the University of Newcastle. She has recently received the ‘Educator of the month’ award from Buckinghamshire NHS Trust.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Kavita believes that the FMLM Clinical Fellow scheme will combine her enthusiasm for system leadership and working across organisational boundaries to optimise patient care. She strongly believes that clinicians are perfectly placed to be leaders in healthcare with the unique ability not only to identify how patient care delivery can be optimised but also consider the leadership skills and workforce needed to deliver change.

Through her work with the NHS Leadership Academy and her MSc in Healthcare Leadership, Kavita has learnt the theory and models for leadership in healthcare. She is excited at the opportunity to be able to apply these more practically during the fellowship and collaborate with like-minded individuals. Her thirst for improving services and patient care will allow her to fully apply herself at her host organisation as well as learn from her mentors.

Kavita is excited to undertake this fellowship where she can lead changes in healthcare on a national scale and be mentored by the most senior leaders in healthcare today. This fellowship will stand her in good stead to return to the NHS not only as a clinician but also as an inspiring future leader.
