Dr Natalie Vanderpant

Care Quality Commission
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Natalie studied medicine at Queens’ College, Cambridge, and University College London, graduating in 2012. Most recently, she has completed her penultimate year of training in Diabetes and Endocrinology in North West London. She developed an early interest in medical leadership during Foundation Training after being selected for the Clinical Leadership Development programme, and received a clinical excellence award from the North West Thames Foundation School. Following this, she gained experience in a different healthcare system, across a breadth of medical specialties whilst working in Melbourne, Australia. However, her commitment to the NHS brought her back for onward training.

Alongside her passion for clinical work, Natalie has a particular interest in education, training and mentorship. She was appointed Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Associate Tutor in 2019, and developed an MRCP(UK) Part 2 Clinical Examination teaching scheme, which supported trainees when teaching courses were cancelled due to the pandemic. She enjoys postgraduate teaching and has been invited to teach for the Medical Trainee Network. She is currently developing a mentorship scheme to support medical trainees applying to higher specialty training.

This year, she was elected as an RCP Trainees Committee Representative for North West London, and is committed to representing the medical trainee voice in her region.

When not at work, she enjoys tap dancing and attempting to cook her grandmother’s Sri Lankan recipes.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Natalie is committed to bringing about positive change for patients and the staff that care for them. Being embedded in a healthcare organisation, and working directly with medical leaders will help provide a wider perspective, whilst nurturing her own leadership and management skills. She is especially interested to see how decisions made at higher leadership levels filter down to drive local improvement, and how different healthcare organisations collaborate. A particular interest of hers is how the medical trainee experience can inform healthcare organisations to drive improvement.

Natalie is delighted to be participating in the National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow Scheme and hopes to apply all that she learns here to her final year of specialty training and beyond.
