New Chair of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management

The voting membership of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) has elected Professor Mayur Lakhani CBE FRCP PRCGP SFFMLM as the next Chair of FMLM.

Professor Lakhani becomes ‘Chair Elect’ with immediate effect and will take office for a term of three years, commencing 1 January 2020. He will take the reins from Dr Iain Wallace, who has served in an interim capacity during FMLM’s first year as an independent charity, following Dame Clare Marx’s departure to become Chair of the GMC in 2018. Dame Clare succeeded FMLM’s Founding Chair, Professor Sir Neil Douglas, following his retirement in 2017.

Professor Lakhani is a practising GP, a Board member of West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group and the out-going President of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He has been a staunch supporter and member of FMLM since 2012 and is a Senior Founding Fellow.

Professor Mayur Lakhani, said:

“I am thrilled to have been elected the next Chair of FMLM. It is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Professor Sir Neil Douglas, Dame Clare Marx and Dr Iain Wallace. As a working GP, I am a passionate believer in the importance of medical leadership in delivering the ‘quadruple aim’ of healthcare reform, covering clinical outcomes, patient experience, better value and workforce wellbeing. Being a member and Senior Fellow of FMLM has opened-up a world of support and has made me a better clinical leader. Now I want to extend that support to more doctors at all stages in their career, including students.

"I look forward to working with fellows, members and staff to promote excellence in medical leadership and to propel FMLM towards the next stage of its exciting journey, at a critical juncture for health and care in the UK. Bringing medical leaders together in collaboration, irrespective of their sector or specialism, is the future for doctors.”

Mr Peter Lees, FMLM Chief Executive, said:

“I am delighted that Mayur has been elected as our new Chair and feel enormously privileged that we have attracted someone of such high calibre and experience and with such a distinguished background in primary care. I very much look forward to working with him.

“It is also timely to express my enormous gratitude to Dr Iain Wallace, who kindly agreed to see FMLM through the transition to independence, in an interim capacity as Chair. Iain has been a great source of wisdom and leadership throughout this process and I know we can count on his continued support as a senior founding fellow of the Faculty and dedicated colleague.”

Dr Iain Wallace, FMLM Interim Chair, said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as Interim Chair, particularly seeing FMLM establish itself as an independent charity and driving force in medical leadership development. As I hand over to Mayur, I would like to thank Peter and the whole FMLM team for their unstinting support while I have been in office and I look forward to working with and handing over to Mayur in the coming weeks.”
