Statement on Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen’s appointment as GMC Chair

FMLM congratulates Professor Dame Carrie MacEwen, an FMLM Founding Senior Fellow, on her appointment as Chair of the General Medical Council (GMC).

Dame Carrie becomes the second woman to hold the Chair, following the retirement in 2021 of Dame Clare Marx, who was previously FMLM Chair.

Peter Lees, FMLM Chief Executive, said:

“This is welcome news and I know Dame Clare Marx would agree, Dame Carrie MacEwen is a worthy successor as Chair of the GMC.

“Dame Carrie has been a valued supporter of FMLM as a Founding Senior Fellow and a Keogh Lecturer, as well as during her time as Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. It is essential to see outstanding medical leaders recognised in such influential positions. I believe the GMC is in excellent hands.”
