Dr Charlotte Richardson

NHS England
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Charlotte is a Specialist Registrar in Infectious Diseases and General Medicine, most recently working at King’s College Hospital, London. She completed her medical degree at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, graduating in 2012. She completed an Academic Foundation Programme in Oxford where she established an interest in service development during a project on provision of Ambulatory Care.

During her Core Medical Training, Charlotte participated in the Leadership and Management Programme at the Whittington Hospital and was appointed a Junior Doctor Lead for Sepsis. She continued to use opportunities to work on service improvement during her specialist infection training; developing and launching an Infection Rapid Access Clinic at the Royal Free Hospital in August 2020.

Outside of the NHS, Charlotte worked with the NGO Medical Action Myanmar in 2014, providing training and support to local doctors. This experience sparked her initial interest in Infectious Diseases as a specialty. She has further experience of the challenges of leadership in unfamiliar environments as an Expedition Medic in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Charlotte is keen to support junior colleagues in their career development; supervising work experience placements and volunteering as a mentor for the Social Mobility Foundation where she coaches aspiring medical students.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Charlotte is passionate about creating a positive culture within the teams she leads and within her wider organisation. She applied for the scheme to explore the range of opportunities within medical leadership, to gain insight into policy making and to gain experience of leading and implementing projects at a national level. In terms of personal leadership competence, she hopes to develop her skills in team building and in bringing people together to achieve set goals. After completion of the program, Charlotte hopes to bring those skills back into her clinical role, improving the effectiveness of clinical teams and taking on more responsibility within her department and hospital.
