Dr Rahul Khamar

NHSX 2021/22
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Rahul Khamar is a Specialty Registrar in Clinical Radiology at the Guy’s and St Thomas’ training scheme in London.

He completed his undergraduate training in London, graduating with both a medical degree from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2018, as well as a Management degree from Imperial College Business School in 2016.

At medical school, Rahul was elected to the executive committee of the Medical Education Support Society for a consecutive 3-year period through which he organised and delivered pre-examination crash courses and mock examinations to hundreds of students. For this, he was given an award for “leadership, innovation and outstanding contributions beyond the call of duty for the society”. After graduating, he went on to deliver a pan-London ‘Radiology Crash Course for Finals’ and following his appointment to radiology-training, a virtual ‘Radiology Applications Masterclass’ to hundreds of prospective applicants. Most recently, he delivered a seminar on Radiology Training Applications in association with the BMA.

During his initial post-graduate training at The Royal Free, Rahul led and nationally presented multiple quality improvement and audit projects to transform services and improve patient care on a macroscopic scale. For such projects, he was awarded a certificate of Merit from the Local Education and Training Board, as well as the 1st prize in the RCR’s National Clinical Radiology Audit Poster Competition 2020. Rahul has completed multiple leadership courses and is also the recipient of an NHS Leadership Academy Award.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Rahul’s motivation for applying to the scheme stems from his desire to gain a higher-level insight into the UK’s socio-political healthcare landscape and to develop his leadership skills in order to lead transformational change in the future.

As a radiology trainee with a qualification in Management, he recognises the central role clinical imaging plays in the patient journey and has gained first-hand insights regarding the problems facing the speciality. Despite the increasing reliance on diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive procedures, a lack of investment has resulted in a workforce and capacity crisis. As the fulcrum upon which many other clinical specialties rely, Rahul believes that radiologists are well-equipped to reach across disciplines, pioneer innovative solutions and improve patient care.

Rahul selected NHSX as his host organisation as he believes that successful digital transformation of the NHS and social care is a pre-requisite to being able to deliver a high quality of patient care. He works in a specialty that is reliant on technology and believes that AI-driven workflows are a key tool that will enable radiologists to meet the growing demands on the specialty. He looks forward to working on such projects and understanding how these can be scaled and implemented across such a vast healthcare organisation.
