Dr Shehryar Khan

Shehryar graduated from University College London in 2021 completing his foundation programme in the East Midlands. During foundation training Shehryar was selected as the youngest ambassador for the Midlands Charter, numerous trusts embracing the Charter underscored its positive impact on trainee welfare.

Shehryar has led several quality improvement (QI) projects leading to changes across a number of hospital departments. With a background in global health, he has multiple publications pertaining to the COVID-19 Pandemic, focussing on differing approaches globally. He has also presented his work at the British Association of Dermatologists, with his project being used to teach trainees at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Advocating for increased access to the medical field, Shehryar assumed the role of Outreach Lead at PAMSA, an initiative for medical education. His efforts led to international presentations and the establishment of mentorship programs that have benefitted numerous students and doctors.

One of Shehryar’s proudest achievements was as Lincolnshire Regional Lead for a charity fundraising event, where he propelled the team to raise over £22,000. To further professional growth, Shehryar completed the IHI Open School Certificate in Quality and Safety, The Mary Seacole Leadership Programme and a course in Product Management to enhance NHS leadership potential.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Shehryar's strong belief centres around the notion that clinicians must possess the capacity to influence health matters at both the intricate individual level and the expansive societal level. His involvement in fostering partnerships with digital health start-ups has provided him with insight into the advantageous outcomes that can stem from embracing substantial changes on a grand scale, greatly benefiting patients.

Having assumed the dual role of a post holder within the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and NHS England, Shehryar finds himself in a unique position. This will allow him to actively engage with national-scale health policies across multiple domains, positioning him at the forefront to learn how healthcare policies are formed. Particularly early in his career, he eagerly anticipates the prospect of learning from seasoned leaders in the field.

Recognising that healthcare policy wields a potential impact even greater than that of direct clinical work, Shehryar is ardent about ensuring that clinicians comprehend the significance of acquiring these skills.
