Dr Stephen Naulls

Health Select Committee / National Audit Office
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Dr Stephen Naulls studied for his undergraduate medical degree at Imperial College London, where he also undertook an intercalated BSc in Neuroscience and Mental Health. He has recently completed his foundation training in East London, where he is still based.

Having grown up in Grimsby, Stephen strongly believes in social mobility and takes an avid interest in the social determinants of health. He has recently been accepted onto a competitive MSc Health Policy programme at Imperial College, where he hopes to supplement his past experience in this area.

Throughout his medical degree, Stephen took an active role in the British Medical Association, rising from a local representative for Imperial College, to represent over 20,000 medical students on the executive of the BMA Medical Student Committee as Deputy Chair and Welfare Lead. He played an important role in the development of the first-ever racial harassment charter for medical students in the UK and provided senior leadership of the committee during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to key discussions about the early-graduation of medical graduates into the workforce internally and publicly via national broadcast and print media. He has represented his colleagues at numerous meetings with national stakeholders including the GMC, Medical Schools Council, and at APPGs in the House of Commons.

Stephen intends to pursue a career in academic psychiatry. He represents Foundation Trainees at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and considers bridging the gap between physical and mental health one of his central interests in the field.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Stephen hopes to pursue a career in psychiatry, a field in which illness can be uniquely disabling in a manner that intersects primary and acute care, the third sector and statutory bodies. In order to adequately advocate for the needs of these patients in a holistic manner, Stephen believes medical leaders should therefore be able to navigate and co-ordinate relationships with such stakeholders appropriately, in keeping with the biopsychosocial model of psychiatric practice, the National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow Scheme provides an invaluable opportunity to gain essential exposure to these organisations at an early stage in his career development.

Indeed, in his career to date, Stephen has had the pleasure of holding various leadership positions across several national organisations. This Fellowship provides the exciting opportunity to further develop his leadership competencies at the most senior level, working alongside some of the most influential medical leaders in the field. He hopes to utilise this mentorship to take the necessary steps to develop into a future leader in the field of psychiatry. He is a strong believer in addressing the social determinants of health via policy initiatives – something the Fellowship provides ample opportunity to contribute towards.

Stephen is very grateful for the opportunity to undertake this Fellowship and looks forward to engaging with his peers and host organisation throughout the course of the year.
