Dr Sunil Mamtora

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Sunil Mamtora studied Medicine at Newcastle University graduating in 2015 before undertaking Foundation Training in the North East for two years after this. Following this, he began training as an Ophthalmologist in the South West as part of the prestigious Severn Deanery, including training jobs at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, the Royal United Hospital in Bath, Cheltenham General Hospital and most recently as a Senior Registrar at the Bristol Eye Hospital. Sunil balances his clinical commitments with his academic work as a researcher and NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow. Sunil has also holds roles at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is the Chair of the Ophthalmologists Training Group which represents trainee Ophthalmologists at the college.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Sunil is passionate about medical leadership and, having worked within all of the eye departments in the South West of England, has had an opportunity to understand and see the benefits that strong leadership has in the delivery of a multi-disciplinary service. Ophthalmology is the busiest outpatient specialty and requires strong, clear and modern leadership to ensure that services are fit for the current and future generations to come. One of Sunil's passions is technology and digital health - he has been involved with numerous projects and research studies that have evaluated the implementation of new technology to improve patient care. Sunil already holds a role at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists where he will be undertaking his year as the National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow and hopes to use the time to dive deeper into areas that he is passionate about within the college to produce real outputs that will positively impact patient care. Furthermore, he will spend time working with colleagues across the country to develop, research and evaluate new technology that will transform hospital eye service delivered care for the future.
