Miss Tanya Miah

UK Health Security Agency
Chief Pharmaceutical Officer's Clinical Fellow 2022/23

Tanya began her pharmacy career at the University of Sunderland graduating in 2013. Since then, she has worked as a hospital pharmacist throughout the Northeast of England. Her career has allowed her opportunities to contribute to projects designed to improve clinical services and patient care. She currently works as a Senior Clinical Pharmacist in Gastroenterology and regularly reviews guidelines and protocols within her directorate to make sure they meet national criteria and are of sound clinical evidence.

Tanya has undertaken various postgraduate programmes of study throughout her career. This includes the Clinical Pharmacy Diploma, Independent Prescribing for Pharmacists, and Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education. She just completed her Masters in Clinical Research; her dissertation involved carrying out a project studying the effect of language barriers in the provision of clinical pharmacy services.

Tanya has always acted as a mentor and role model to others. She always works closely with those under her care to ensure they develop appropriately and achieve the best they can. She has learnt how important the pastoral side of management is and how vital it is to develop trusting and supportive working relationships.

Tanya had the opportunity to work as a Pharmacy Teaching Fellow on the Medical Degree Programme at Newcastle University for two years alongside her clinical pharmacy role. This allowed her to gain experience in education and training and a greater appreciation for interprofessional collaboration. She believes it is important for healthcare professionals to work seamlessly together to provide the best care to patients.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Tanya is passionate about health services research that can have substantial and worthy contributions towards improving patient care and NHS services as well as raising the profile of pharmacists in healthcare; this is her main reason for applying to the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer’s Clinical Fellow Scheme. Key areas of interest for her are shared decision making in clinical practice and reducing health inequalities. She believes it is a vital priority to make progress in these areas and is keen to champion this nationally.

Tanya desires to be part of creating positive change on a global level. She feels the pharmacy profession needs to strive for greater emphasis to be placed on sustainable medicines use, through reducing medicines wastage by tackling polypharmacy and holding accountable the companies, institutions and organisations we work with that are yet to declare a climate crisis. She is passionate about living an environmentally friendly life and hopes to be part of a profession that demonstrates we care about the world we leave behind for future generations.

Tanya is excited to gain experience at the forefront of the NHS to develop the leadership, management and strategy skills to develop her ideas into ground-breaking projects. She is looking forward to challenging herself in a different and stimulating role as a Chief Pharmaceutical Officer’s Clinical Fellow and emerge as a future pharmacy leader to provide input in designing and delivering enhanced clinical pharmacy services that are sustainable and protected for the uncertain future that we have ahead of us.
