Dr Vijay Patel

NHS England and NHS Improvement 2021/22
National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow Scheme 2021/22

Vijay studied medicine at the University of Leicester where he gained his MBChB alongside an Ophthalmology focussed Intercalated BSc (Hons). Upon graduating he undertook his Foundation Programme training in the West Midlands and subsequently returned to the East Midlands to undertake training in General Practice. He is currently in his final year of training.

Reason for applying for the scheme

Vijay has a keen interest in healthcare policy development and healthcare improvement. Having led numerous quality improvement and research projects, presented both nationally and internationally, recognised through numerous awards and published in various peer reviewed journals, he acknowledges the need for expert clinical leadership and management at the core of these processes. In addition to this, he is interested in global heath and health inequalities and hopes to continue to pursue engagement in humanitarian endeavours, whilst also locally focussing on healthcare collaboration between primary and secondary care stakeholders and the digital transformation being undertaken to underpin this.

Vijay looks forward to commencing his fellowship with NHS England and NHS Improvement as the National Medical Directors Clinical Fellow. He hopes to use this unique opportunity to work alongside senior medical leaders to develop his understanding of healthcare policy generation and sustainable implementation of organisation wide health innovation and transformation. He envisages that this process will help further nurture leadership and management skills, which can continue to be utilised throughout his career to steer positive changes in healthcare delivery.
