FMLM Trainee Steering Group - 3rd Session: Compassionate leadership in a complex world

The FMLM Trainee Steering Group is excited to present a new Introduction to Leadership Development Programme, tailored specifically to doctors in training. It comprises of a series of monthly online events over the next year, which will offer both an introduction to a range of core leadership topics, as well as key insights from leaders both within and outside the field of healthcare.

Each session will offer a unique blend of education and inspiration, with the aim of supporting your development as a clinical leader. All attendees can record their learning in the FMLM Leadership Development Passport, which can provide portfolio evidence for your progression towards achieving the required leadership competencies.

We’re delighted to be hosting this programme, and we look forward to welcoming you on the next step of your leadership journey.

3rd Session: Compassionate leadership in a complex world, Monday 6 September: 7pm - 8:30pm, webinar followed by an interative workshop

This event has 2 parts: a live presentation via Zoom on compassionate leadership at 7pm which is open to all, followed by a Zoom workshop which will encourage reflection on what compassionate leadership really means within the healthcare setting. The workshop has very limited spaces to enable meaningful interaction so please book your place in advance if you would like to attend.

7 – 7:30pm Enabling compassionate leadership and why it matters – Dr Liz Thomas (open to all)

Register

Compassionate leadership helps teams function better, with clearer communication, more satisfied teams, less staff sickness and ultimately a safer environment for patients – although these factors are difficult to quantitatively measure. Dr Liz Thomas will draw on her leadership experience to talk about the highs and lows of leadership. She strongly believes that we all have leadership qualities and that it is possible for us all to blossom with the right encouragement.

7:30 – 8:15pm How do you know what to do when you don’t know what to do? Exploring compassionate leadership in a VUCA* environment – Dr Susy Stirling (limited to 24 participants)

Register

 (*Volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous)

This 45 minute interactive workshop will look at VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) environments, and will explore what skills are required for us as leaders if these are the conditions we are working in.  We will examine what compassionate leadership has to offer in a VUCA environment and consider how we might begin to embed these leadership behaviours. There is no preparation required, other than reflecting on what the words volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous mean to you from your own professional experience. Please ensure you  are in an environment where you can hear and contribute with your video on. There are limited spaces for this event in order to enable meaningful interaction between participants so please only sign up if you plan to attend.
