FMLM Trainee Steering Group - 6th Session: Media Training for Doctors

The FMLM Trainee Steering Group (TSG) is excited to present the Introduction to Leadership Development Programme, tailored specifically to doctors in training. It comprises of a series of monthly free online events over the next year, which offers both an introduction to a range of core leadership topics, as well as key insights from leaders both within and outside the field of healthcare.

Each session offers a unique blend of education and inspiration, with the aim of supporting your development as a clinical leader. All attendees can record their learning in the FMLM Leadership Development Passport, which can provide portfolio evidence for your progression towards achieving the required leadership competencies.

6th Session: Media Training for Doctors  Tuesday 14 December: 7pm - 8:30pm

Now more than ever, doctor's and other healthcare professionals may unwittingly find themselves being interviewed by the media. The ability to remain calm in a crisis is crucial and Mosaic aim to prepare you with the tools and knowledge to handle the media when the heat is on.

With more than 20 years experience of delivering first class media and marketing training courses to groups and individuals from private, public and third sector organisations, delivered by PR professionals and BBC journalists, we are extremely fortunate to have Mosaic deliver this unique session.

In this session the following key media skills will be covered :

  • what the media are looking for
  • understanding the opportunity
  • key message development
  • quotes and soundbites
  • working live or pre-recorded
  • practical tips on the differences between print, radio and TV

Mosaic has more than 20 years experience of providing media and marketing training to some of the UK's leading hospitals, healthcare clinics and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG's) within the NHS and for private healthcare companies

This session will be delivered by Karen Ainley

Karen is a former TV presenter and reporter with BBC Look East and presenter for BBC 2 Matter of Fact Series. She started her journalism career on the Braintree & Witham Times, before moving to the Colchester Gazette as the Health Reporter. She spent four years as a radio reporter and newsreader with BBC Essex before moving into television. She is a co-founder of Mosaic and has been media training captains of industry for over 20 years. As a graduate in Publishing and Computer Studies, she loves all things techie, and has an MSc in Digital Marketing Communications. Karen also delivers the Chartered Institute of Marketing Digital Marketing Strategy course on behalf of the Academy for Marketing.

Hosted by Jonathan Stewart (TSG Lead for Northern Ireland)

Johnny is General Practice registrar and Clinical Research Fellow. He is the currently the Northern Ireland representative on the FMLM Trainee Steering Committee. He has a keen interest in medical leadership and founded the Northern Ireland cohort of the Next Generation GP leadership programme for GP trainees and early career GPs. Johnny has been involved in research throughout undergraduate and postgraduate training. He is currently working on COVID-19 phase 3 trials, including helping to lead the Northern Ireland arm of a UK COVID vaccine clinical trial.
