Assessment and development centres – what do they mean for NHS leadership?

The use of Assessment & Development Centres (A&DCs) in the NHS is becoming increasingly common, particularly in relation to the assessment of leadership capability and potential.

In the wake of the Francis report we are reminded of the challenges of influencing organisational culture and of the role leader’s play in this.  In Berwick’s recent paper there is also reference of the need to ensure the right people are appointed to leadership roles and that organisations invest in their capability and development.

A&DCs can (and are often) designed specifically to fulfil these requirements.  This article evaluates their relevance and impact whilst outlining the features and benefits.
