Why should trainees join FMLM?

One of the highlights of my role as FMLM’s Chief Operating Officer is working with so many trainee members and clinical fellows. Working with trainees is both inspiring and invigorating – the insight, passion and drive you bring to the organisation and the FMLM team is invaluable; we could not do without you.

FMLM is the only medical faculty in the UK to support all medical grades and specialties in leadership and management. We were clear from the outset that trainees and medical students, as future leaders, must be an integral part of the organisation. Now with over 1000 trainee and medical student members, it is clear many doctors genuinely want to be involved in leading and improving the design and delivery of health services.

Our ambition is to support and develop trainees to be the leaders of today and leaders of tomorrow. Working with our trainee members we offer:

  • Leaders in Healthcare conference (31 Oct -2 Nov) - several sessions are designed for trainees and there are numerous opportunities for networking. The Agents for Change event on 31 October is specifically for trainees. If you’re interested in being involved pleasedkirkam [at] bmj.com ( contact us)
  • Online resources including blogs and podcasts; we invite contributions from international leadership experts and members. If you’d like to write a blog for us, communications [at] fmlm.ac.uk (let us know).
  • News and policy guidance/insight – as well as reading the latest news you can contribute to the popular one-pagers on policy and initiatives.
  • Certification against the Leadership and management standards for medical professionals - design of the certification process for team leaders (which may trainees will be eligible for) is due to start late 2016. If you’re interested in being involved in this work please kirsten.armit [at] fmlm.ac.uk (get in touch).
  • Leadership development opportunities through the trainee steering group, regional networks and a jobs and opportunities area designed to present opportunities locally and nationally
  • Coaching and mentoring – an opportunity to both be mentored by senior colleagues as well as learn mentoring skills to support those junior to you.
  • Essential skill events - we’ve launch a media and politics session specifically for trainee members and our upcoming workshop on developing your leadership through MBTI will help you understand and work on your behaviours, strengths and weaknesses.
  • 360 degree feedback tool – two levels – team member and team leader – are appropriate for trainees. The tool enables you to receive feedback on your leadership behaviours and receive a detailed report to identify your strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Guidance on career transitions – drawing on the knowledge and advice of members who have ‘been there and done that’ there is a series of ‘transitions’ guides at all career stages.

Keep an eye on www.fmlm.ac.uk/trainees where we'll be collating the latest events, news and opinion, resources, jobs and opportunities for you.
